The bloody clash between the men of the Federal road safety corps and tricycle operators in Owerri has been condemned by Mr. Vitus Ekeocha who heads the National Orientation Agency in the state. He maintained that the situation could have been avoided.
According to him, the situation which resulted in the damage of some parts of his office complex located along Okigwe road was caused by the excessive mounting of road blocks by men of the corps in Owerri. Mr Ekeocha alleged that the men of the corps collect a lot of money from the commercial tricycle operators when they are arrested for various traffic offenses.
The state commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Dr. Audu Ahmed Abubakar while reacting to the incident, disclaimed media reports that his men also had clash with the keke operators. He said they only assisted to save a sister agency from the angry mob.
“if not for our intervention, the keke operators who had already started throwing stones and bottles filled with fuel on their building would have taken over the premises of the command.” he said.
Imo State Sector Command of the FRSC, Mr Godwin Omiko commended the immediate intervention of NSCDC which according to him averted a bloodbath that fateful day.
The offices of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, National Orientation Agency and Federal Road Safety Commission are all located very close to each other along the Okigwe road in Owerri.
