Sorry for starting your Sunday morning with this story but a resident of Owerri shared this with us. Still wondering why young people still engage in cultism.

The Imo State police command paraded 25 alleged cultists and 10 armed robbers to newsmen in Owerri last week. The robbery suspects confessed to the crime while some of those arrested for alleged cult activities claimed they were wrongly accused and arrested. The state police public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem who briefed the newsmen, said that the alleged cultists were arrested in a thick bush at Federal University of Technology, Owerri FUTO during an initiation ceremony. He said that while some of the alleged suspects are students of FUTO and Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, others came from Abia state and other states for their fraternity’s initiation.

The activities of this irresponsible fellows have continued to be a source of threat and nuisance to students who have come for genuine academic pursuits.  An Architecture student of Federal Polytechnic Nekede told us that he was robbed of his laptop early this year while going to school in the evening to complete an assignment.

The school management and government should join hands in ensuring that these students are safe while going about their usual academic activities.
