Artiste Shoutout | Meet Xbusta, learn about how he started

By Mbagwu Amarachi

Okafor Golden Chinedu popularly known as X-Busta was born on February 27th, 1994. He hails from Orlu in Imo state, Nigeria. He comes from a Christian home.

X-Busta is a rapper who started singing and rapping at a tender age in Obalende Lagos state and continued in Owerri when he gained admission into Imo state university to study Estate Management.

In his first year in school, he was made the course representative of his department. In his second and third year, he was elected the Public Relations Officer of his department, and the Director of Sports of the Imo state University until he graduated with a second-class upper.

X-Busta first started rapping in the lecture halls in the absence of lecturers and then at the school Love Garden every Wednesday. He was respected for his lyrical prowess and freestyles with virtually anything and everything around him. Every word thrown at him in English, Pidgin, Igbo and Yoruba language can be turned into a rap.

There’s a saying which says, “A man’s gifts maketh ways for him.”

And X-Busta’s gifts made ways for him into the streets of Aladinma and Bishops Court in Owerri where he performed at hostel parties and campfire nights and his number of fans grew larger with each passing day.

The way he left the crowd with his name on their lips made him get invitations to shows outside Aladinma, Bishops Court, Owerri and Imo state where he perfectly represented himself and the school despite his tiny voice.

X-Busta’s gifts had taken him to Hero’s Square for the annual Music Trek, where he thought he had just gone to hang out with friends, have some drinks and watch great performers perform. His innate talent and unwavering passion for music urged him to rise and climb the stage when a rapper was sought among the audience. He just couldn’t resist.

He displayed his talent as soon as he got to the stage and according to eye witness account, M.I. prayed for him, saying that what he (M.I.) has achieved will be X-Busta’s beginning. Just before the show ended, Gbenga Adeyinka, an MC who’s not easily impressed promised to personally help introduce the young artiste to top music acts.

When Valencia Records discovered X-Busta, he was signed in and there he recorded his songs ‘Shomo’ which was produced by Yung Rock, and ‘A Short’ produced by L.M.G.

He did Street Worship with M.I.C., RedLoaf, L.M.G. and Casablanca. He also did ‘Ebezina’ which was released while he was still in school.

X-Busta has featured in songs with Splash, Dbanj, Vector, and many other famous artists and he has shared music stages with M.I., Dr. Sid, Naeto C, Praiz, Olamide, Mr Raw, Eedris Abdulkareem, Vector and many other superstars in the Nigerian music space.

He has won so many competitions including:

  • Amstel Malt Show Time, Enugu – 2011.
  • King of Mic, Owerri – 2011.
  • Freestlye King, Imo state – 2012.
  • Lyrical Lords – 2013.
  • Imo Carnival Best Artiste – 2014.
  • Luxury City/Sugar Land 1Million Naira Competition – 2015.

He has also won tones of awards among which are:

~ Most Talented Student in Estate Management – 2011.

~ MostTalented Student in Imo State University – 2012/13/14.

~ Best Artist in Imo Sate – 2013/14/15.

~  Starlet Next Rated Art – 2014.

~ Most Talented Student in Nigeria University Awards – 2014.

~ Whisper Magazine Artist of The Year – 2015.

~ IMEA Artist of the Year & Lyricist on The Roll – 2016.

X-Busta’s humbleness fetched him no enemies but more genuine fans in Aladinma and Bishops Court where he started from.

The young rising star was recently invited to perform at Five Star (A Label owned by E-money) and has signed into to the Five Star Music Label; a record label home to Kcee, Harrysong and Skiibii.

I am particularly impressed by him for believing in his town. Someone who shot a video for him told me early this year that Xbusta said he doesn’t plan to run off to Lagos like most young artistes do. He confidently said he will blow in Owerri. Little did I know that he was being prophetic. We wish him all the best in his career and hope he positively impacts younger artistes in the state.
