Earlier this year, reports of discovering a “baby factory” in Owerri was all over the news. There have been up to two reported cases of such just this year alone. It is sad to note that this unfortunate incidents have continued to happen even with all the efforts by security agencies to stop them. Their unending resolve to curtail this ungodly act will however be commended especially in the light of the discovery of another one at Umutueke community following a tip off by concerned individuals.
The elderly Mrs Esther Akunmadu, was arrested by men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps for allegedly operating a baby factory in the community.
She however denied the allegation saying she is a retired mid wife and was only running a maternity home. She accepted paying a bribe of N100, 000 to the security operatives when they came to search her premises. They discovered two babies that are about a week old and four women in the supposed maternity home. One of the women claimed she was brought to the place by her mother and didn’t know if there was any form of agreement between her and the owner.
This cases are really bringing bad publicity to Imo state and Owerri in particular and more efforts should be made to curtail these acts.
