Protesters believed to be supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), took to the streets yesterday to protest the results of the just concluded gubernatorial elections in the state which was declared inconclusive by the state branch of Independent National Electoral Commision (INEC). They carried placards with various inscriptions and demanded that the PDP candidate, Chief Emeka Ihedioha be declared winner. Some of the placards also asked the Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha to vacate the Douglas House.
The director of the Governors’s campaign organization, Iheukwumere Alaribe however, said the major reason why they are protesting is because the state INEC failed to deliver the election to PDP.
The protesters caused major traffic congestion along the Okigwe road which is where PDP has its state secretariat. Some irresponsible young people took advantage of the situation to harass citizens of the state and tricycle operators because they didn’t join in their cause.
The situation was salvaged by men of the Nigerian Police Force who tactically dispersed the crowd of protesters to prevent the situation from escalating.
We also have reliable information that pro-Rochas groups are mobilizing to carry out a solidarity rally today.
