The monthly sanitation exercise which was suspended for a very long time in the state finally kicked off last Saturday in Owerri. Prior to that, a press statement was released by the state government to that effect. The exercise witnessed massive participation as an impressive number of people were seen cleaning up the gutters, business premises, roads and street corners around some parts of the State . Equally, government agencies were seen moving round to monitor the exercise. More impressively, there were vehicles evacuating the refuse generated to designated location unlike in the past were such refuse are left on the road for many days causing eye-sour, offensive odour and traffic.
Owerri residents commended the government for re-introducing the sanitation exercise to help Owerri reclaim its long lost glory as the cleanest State Capital in Nigeria. Government is therefore urged to maintain the exercise. It would be recalled that there have been public outcry on the abysmal sanitary condition in Owerri and suburbs in recent times.
