‘Pure water’ now scarce in Owerri as a bag sells for N200
The Governor Rochas led administration promised to increase internally generated revenue (IGR) after his re-election into power last year. He appears to be keeping to that promise as various business ventures and organizations have either had their taxes increased or asked to start paying. Even Churches have been asked to start paying taxes according to publication by some local newspapers.
The latest to be hit are the manufacturers of sachet water popularly known as ‘pure water’. They have currently embarked on strike to protest the move by the government to increase their tax.
AlaOwerri.com gathered that the union is enforcing the industrial action by ensuring that all manufacturers don’t distribute their products. Any defaulting manufacturer will be mandated to pay the sum of N100, 000. This has resulted in the scarcity of the product in some areas and the available ones selling for as high as N200 against the usual price of N70.
