I nearly screamed this morning when I saw the tweet from Punch Nigeria announcing the sudden demise of coach Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, one of Nigeria’s finest football icons. It is quite sad considering he is just 56 years old. You will recall he lost his wife to cancer last year.
As the whole country mourn this great man, I recall my personal encounter with him in 2014 that confirms him as quite a gentleman and a great leader. It was the finals of a Mastercard competition that later got me visiting Lisbon to watch the UEFA Champions league finals.
He was one the judges alongside Ali Baba, Uche Pedro, the founder of BellaNaija and two other judges. I was the last to present and I was a little scared during the presentation. Anyway, I didn’t even realize Mr Keshi was the one sitting across from me till after my presentation and a fellow contestant told me. He was modest and very kind (other judges were good too). See the video of my presentation that later helped me emerge as one of the winners in the contest.
I pray that his gentle soul will rest in peace and his family will be strong to bear his loss.
Nigeria will miss him.
