Owerri records first TEDx event in South-East Nigeria


Details from the first TEDx event to hold in the south-east

The first independent TEDx event in South East Nigeria was successfully held recently in Owerri on Saturday, May 20, 2017 in the capital of Imo State with the initial theme “Unleash the Dragon”. The novel event attracted Students, youths, entrepreneurs, academia and technocrats. Some of the distinguished personalities who spoke at the event included Chioma Ukonu, co-founder RecyclePoints, Confidence Odionye, Founder of BeatTraffick, Chibueze Ikedi of Learn Factory, Kennedy Ekezie, a young activist and Chibuihe Obi, a professional Teacher.

The speakers in line with the theme discussed waste recycling, usefulness of drones in modern society, introducing children to technology early in life, the urgency to end female genital mutilation and adopting effective teaching methodology in schools.


Owerri has joined major cities in the like Marrakesh, Euston, Paris, Silicon Valley, Oxford, Lagos and 1600 other places that have held TEDx conferences, all organized by passionate volunteers.

TEDxAladinma is licensed by TED, a US-based not-for-profit enterprise devoted to the propagation of ideas worth spreading. It celebrates and spreads locally-driven ideas in technology, science, entertainment, design and business, through conferences in more than 100 languages across the world. In January 2017, Emeka Ulor was licensed to host TEDxAladinma as a standard TEDx event for Imo.
